A critical step for muralists is the drawing of charcoal studies. Their purpose is to prepare a scaled rendering that allows the artist to work out perspectives, proportions and the size of the actual mural. Hurd (1904 - 1984), a native of Roswell, created the mural in 1952. In a letter prior to creating the artwork, Hurd described his concept for the piece this way: "(The Mural) would represent many human activities upon our great southwestern background-activities such as types of farming, stockraising, habitation - and finally in overall picture it would stress...various aspects of the use, control and conservation of water and land". Hurd's distinctive style and the use of southwestern subject matter brought him great prominence and fame, which continues today, two decades after his passing. Architects, magazine editors, art connoisseurs, a president and a Saudi king sought out Hurd during his career for commissioned works. $3 for adults, $2 for senior citizens (60 and over), $1 for children ages 6 to 17. 505-522-4100. http://www.frhm.org
